If you’ve ever been curious about natural family planning (NFP) or wanted a clearer way to understand your fertility signals, you’re in the right place. The Boston Cross Check (BCC) method is a modern, evidence-based approach that’s been gaining traction for its flexibility and reliability. But what exactly is it? How does it work? And why might it be the perfect fit for you? Let’s dive in and unpack this fascinating method together.

What Is the Boston Cross Check Method Guide All About?

So, here’s the scoop: the Boston Cross Check method is a natural family planning technique that helps you track your fertility by cross-referencing multiple fertility signs. Instead of relying on just one indicator, this method combines several signals to give you a clearer picture of when you’re fertile and when you’re not.

Why is this important? Well, fertility can be a bit tricky to pin down sometimes. None of our fertility biomarkers (physical signs of fertility) or tools can pinpoint ovulation to a specific day. But by cross-checking these signs, you reduce the chance of mistakes and get a more accurate understanding of your cycle. It’s like having a built-in GPS for your fertility!

This method is especially great for women and couples who want to avoid or achieve pregnancy naturally, or simply want to understand their bodies better. Plus, it’s backed by science and designed to be user-friendly, so you don’t have to be a medical expert to use it, nor do you need to be a medical expert to teach it.

How Does the Boston Cross Check Method Work?

Alright, let’s get into the nitty-gritty. The Boston Cross Check method focuses on three main fertility signs:

  1. Basal Body Temperature (BBT) - This is your body’s resting temperature, typically taken first thing in the morning before you get out of bed. After ovulation, your BBT rises slightly due to increased progesterone.

  2. Cervical Fluid - Your body produces different types of fluid from the cervix throughout your cycle. You identify when your fluid is showing characteristics of fertility.

  3. Hormone Measurements - The main cycle hormones we track are estrogen and LH through the Clearblue Fertility Monitor, but we have options for other at-home urinary tests as well.

The magic happens when you cross-check these signs. For example, if your cervical fluid was showing high fertility but has since dried up, but BBT has not risen, you might not be fully in the infertile phase yet. Or if your monitor says peak, but an LH test is fairly low, cervical fluid not showing elevated fertility, and no temp rise follows, that indicates a likely false peak scenario.

Looking at these signs together is like piecing together a puzzle where each piece confirms or questions the others. Of course, we do offer instruction for those times you need to rely solely on a single biomarker, so you're not left without options.

Why choose BCC over other NFP Methods?

You might be wondering, “There are so many NFP methods out there. Why pick this one?” Great question! Here’s why the Boston Cross Check method stands out:

  • Evidence-Based and Modern: It’s built on solid scientific research and updated with the latest fertility knowledge. We love incorporating new technologies but do not rush into new devices or approaches before we have sufficient evidence of their reliability.

  • User-Friendly: While there is a learning curve - no matter the method, fertility charting is an acquired skill! - BCC is relatively straightforward with easy-to-read materials, personalized instructor guidance, and rules designed to be easy to remember.

  • Flexible: Can be used with confidence in regular cycles and in transitional times like perimenopause and postpartum charting, when hormones are more in flux.

  • Empowering: Helps you understand your body deeply, which is a game-changer for health and self-awareness.

  • Supports Fertility Goals: When it comes to family planning, whether you want to avoid pregnancy or conceive, this method adapts to your needs.

Plus, the Boston Cross Check method is supported by a growing community of instructors worldwide, making it easier to find guidance and support when you need it.

Practical Tips for Getting Started with Boston Cross Check

Ready to give it a try? Here are some practical tips to help you get started smoothly:

  • Get a Good Basal Thermometer: For the science-minded among you, fever thermometers are accurate within a certain range, but BBT thermometers are designed for precision to detect temperature fluctuations. For BCC use, you'll want a traditional BBT thermometer or the Tempdrop wearable. Ask your BCC instructor which thermometer is best for you.

  • Observe Cervical Fluid: A few quick checks daily, ideally before using the bathroom. Note the characteristics you feel and see. Details in the Method Instructional Program manual for Session 1!

  • Track Daily: Consistency is key!

  • Keep a Chart: Record your observations daily. BCC offers paper charts, Google Sheets charts, or the option of charting with the Read Your Body app.

  • Be Patient: It might take a few cycles to get the hang of it. Don’t get discouraged if it feels tricky at first. Most people feel confident by the conclusion of their third cycle charting.

Remember, the goal is to learn about your own unique self. No two bodies are exactly the same, so trust your abilities and adjust as you go. Your instructor is standing by to assist.

  • Enhance Communication: Couples often find that tracking together improves intimacy and shared decision-making.

It’s not just about avoiding or achieving pregnancy - it’s about embracing your body’s natural rhythms and making informed choices.
