If you’ve ever wondered how to get in tune with your body and understand your fertility better, you’re in the right place. Tracking fertility signs is a fantastic way to get to know your cycle, whether you’re trying to conceive, avoid pregnancy naturally, or just want to be more aware of your health. It’s like having a little secret map that your body draws for you every month. Intrigued? Let’s dive into the key fertility awareness signs you should know about.

Why Tracking Fertility Signs Matters

So, why bother tracking fertility signs? Well, your body gives off some pretty clear signals about when you’re most fertile. By paying attention to these, you can:

  • Identify your fertile window - the days when you’re most likely to conceive.

  • Understand your menstrual cycle better - spotting changes and knowing better when to expect your period

  • Make informed decisions about family planning without relying on hormones or devices.

  • Empower yourself with knowledge about your reproductive health.

It’s like becoming your own fertility detective! Plus, it’s natural, non-invasive, and can be super empowering.

How to Start Tracking Fertility Signs

What exactly should you be looking for? Here are the main signs to track:

1. Basal Body Temperature (BBT)

Your basal body temperature is your body’s temperature at rest, usually taken first thing in the morning before you get out of bed, or in the case of Tempdrop taken throughout the night with a representative temp provided for you in the morning. After ovulation, a hormone called progesterone causes a slight increase in your BBT - usually about 0.5°F (0.3°C). Tracking this daily can help you spot when ovulation has occurred.

How to track: Use a digital basal thermometer and record your temperature every morning at around the same time. BCC allows for adjustments, which gives you a roughly 3 hour window of waking to obtain a good valid temp. Over time, you’ll notice a pattern of lower temps before ovulation and a rise afterward.

2. Cervical Fluid Changes

Your cervical fluid changes in amount, texture and appearance throughout your cycle, reflecting hormonal shifts. BCC has a super-simple system of categorizing cervical fluid. Here's a very quick basic outline:

  • D for Dry: Least fertile type

  • M for Moist: Middling fertility... this encompasses a range of observations such as creamy, pasty, and slightly stretchy, with a smooth or moist sensation.

  • W for Wet: The most fertile type... it may be clear, very stretchy, or watery, and may feel slippery or wet.

Paying attention to these changes can help you pinpoint your fertile days.

3. Hormonal testing

Yep, you can test a variety of reproductive hormones through at-home urinary tests. Just pee in a cup and dip the test stick, and wait for the result! BCC routinely uses estrogen and LH testing, and offers instruction in PdG testing as well.

4. Other Physical and Emotional Signs

Some women notice additional signs like mild ovulation pain (mittelschmerz), breast tenderness, mood and libido changes, blood sugar differences, and changes in cervix position (that last one can take a bit of practice to get comfortable with; we have a guide to help you if that's something you'd like to keep tabs on.) These can be helpful to chart and aid greatly in self-knowledge, but we don't use them for family planning protocols since the evidence-basis on effectiveness in doing so just isn't there. BCC offers a cervix position line on our charts, and all other signs can be jotted down in notes on the chart or in custom lines in the Read Your Body app.

Wow, that's a LOT!?

It can seem like a lot! There's a learning curve... that's why BCC instructors work closely with you through that curve and provide personalized support for the entire first year you're charting if you opt for the BCC Method Instructional Program for regular cycles. But don't worry... while we do teach you about each of these signs - how to observe them, how to chart them, and how to interpret each on on the chart - you don't have to use all three major ones or any of the minor ones. We do recommend using at least two for a cross-check approach, if possible, as that can provide greater insight or more security... You might prefer to pick the two most appealing primary fertility signs. We also teach you how to rely on a single sign when necessary!

Tips for Effective Fertility Tracking

Tracking fertility signs sounds great, but how do you make it work for you? Here are some tips:

  • Be consistent: Track your signs daily.

  • Use a dedicated app or method chart: This helps you spot patterns over time.

  • Learn from experts: Consulting a certified instructor to deepen your understanding and help avoid errors and minimize frustration.

  • Combine signs: Using multiple signs together can be more secure.

  • Be patient: It might take a few cycles to get the hang of it and see clear patterns.

  • Don't stress: The unofficial mantra of BCC is "keep calm, and chart on!"

Remember, this is about connecting with your body, not stressing over numbers.

How Tracking Fertility Signs Supports Your Health Journey

Tracking your cycle isn’t just about pregnancy or contraception. It’s a powerful tool for overall health awareness. Changes in your cycle or fertility signs can signal hormonal imbalances, thyroid issues, or other health concerns. By keeping an eye on your body’s rhythms, you may be able to catch potential problems early and discuss them with your physician or healthcare provider.

Many women find that understanding their cycle helps them manage symptoms like PMS, irregular periods, or mood swings better. It’s like having a personal health dashboard!
